What it is?

The Golden Circle is a 300km popular tourist route that takes you to see some of the most iconic landmarks and places of cultural, historic, and natural qualities. The Golden Circle tour starts from Reykjavik to south west Iceland through the historic national park Þingvellir, to the spectacular Gullfoss waterfall (meaning golden falls) and Geysir hydrothermal area. Other stops on this tour include Skálholt church, Hveragerði greenhouse village, Kerið volcano crater, and the Nesjavellir or Hellisheidarvirkjun geothermal power plant.

The tour offers visitors the opportunity to enjoy fascinating views of some of the most popular and exciting natural phenomena in the country. Here is a highlight of sights to see on the Golden Circle Tour

NATIONAL PARK ÞINGVELLIR

Known as one of Iceland’s most significant historical sites, Þingvellir, otherwise known as Thingvellir National Park, is among the most frequently visited attraction in Reykjavik. The park prides itself as the place where the first parliament in the country was founded in 930AD. One of the reasons why visitors go there is to explore the beautiful, natural environment and learn more about the greatest historical site in Iceland. Officially declared a National Park in 1930, Thingvellir is a magnificent cultural site with astounding natural environment.

GEYSIR HYDROTHERMAL AREA

From Thingvellir National Park, the next stop will be at Geysir, world famous geothermal hot spring. It is located in the Haukadalur valley and also reputed as the oldest geyser in the world. The major attraction in this area is the bubbling mud pools, erupting hot springs, and multi-colored hydrothermal. From here, you stand a chance of seeing eruption from its nearby neighbor, Strokkur geyser, which is about 50 meters south. If you have a camera with you, then you can take amazing pictures of this eruption which occurs every 5 – 7 minutes.

GULLFOSS WATERFALL

The final stop of the tour takes you to Gullfoss waterfall, located in southwest Iceland and undoubtedly the most popular and beautiful waterfall in the country. This lovely attraction offers visitors the chance to experience the beauty and power of Mother Nature. If you visit the Gullfoss Waterfall on a sunny day, there is the possibility of a rainbow showing up. While at the edge of the waterfall, you will feel the spray of the ice-cold water on your face. After having a nice time exploring the golden waterfall, you can visit the Gullfoss Café for a lunch break.

Hire a car or book a tour!

If you are on a family vacation in Reykjavik, the cheapest and most convenient way to experience the Golden Circle is to hire a car. There are also loads of tour companies in Reykjavik that offer a nine-hour Golden Circle tour as well. This is certainly the most popular day trip in Iceland. Your trip to Iceland would be considered incomplete without seeing the spouting Geysers, great Thingvellir National Park, a breathtaking scenery and spectacular geology, and the magnificent Gullfoss warerfall. Take advantage of the Golden Circle and enjoy spectacular and remarkable sights.
