Jan, 07 | |

Located at Laugarvegur 116 in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, the Icelandic Phallological Museum (or “the Penis Museum of Iceland”) is famous for being the only museum in the world to have a large display of phallic specimens belonging to various species of mammal. Some of the collection in the museum are 280 “penises and penile parts” from 93 species of animals including 55 specimens belonging to 16 different kinds of whale, 118 from land mammal and one gotten from a “rogue polar bear”. Four men has so far pledged to donate their penises to the museum. In July 2011, the Icelandic Phallological Museum got its first specimen from an Icelander, a 95 year old man who died in January 2011. After his death, the Icelander donor’s penis was surgically removed and added to the great collections of Icelandic Mammals.

Founded by Sigurður Hjartarson, a retired teacher, in 1997, the Penis Museum of Island is considered the most interesting museum in the city. The penises on display are in different sizes and shapes. The largest exhibit is the penis of a blue whale measuring 67 inches long and weighing 150 lb. Some penises are so small that you’ll be needing a magnifying glass to have a good view at. The smallest one belonging to a hamster is approximately 0.08 inches.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum features a “folklore section” where guests can see exhibitions of mythological penises. On its catalogue are specimen taken from kelpies, trolls, elves etc. as well as the renowned Ghost of Snæfell. The penises of the elves are described by the museum’s websites as “unusually big and old”. It’s certainly a sight to see. Here, you can also find the penises of a merman, a one-eyed, a one-armed and one-legged monster known as a Beach-Murmurer and a Christmas Lad whose penis was presented for exhibition at the museum by one of Reykjavik’s former mayor.

The museum is working towards collecting penis specimens from all Icelandic mammals. The Icelandic Phallological Museum also exhibits penis related objects and phallic artwork. Most of the exhibitions are presented to the museum, and the only purchase made till now is the penis of an elephant which is about 3.3 ft long. These exhibits are displayed in different kinds of jars and preserved using a variety of techniques such as preserving in formaldehyde, salting, and stuffing while some are dried and hung on the museum’s wall. Guests can also find the penisies of mike whale. Due to the large size of one of the penises taken from a bull in the museum, it was transformed into a walking stick. Sigurður, the museum’s owner also illuminated the exhibits in the museum using lamps made from ram’s testicles.

The Icelandic Phallological Museum is one of the popular tourist atractions in Iceland with loads of visitors yearly. The quest to obtain a human penis made the museum gain international media attention, as it was featured in a Canadian documentary film titled, “The Family Member”.
